  • Is vaginal discharge normal?

It is perfectly normal to experience some vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge is part of your body's natural cleaning system. The consistency and colour may vary slightly during your monthly cycle, but normal discharge shouldn't smell. If you experience more discharge than usual, and the discharge is odourless this could indicate vaginal yeast infection. If the discharge has an unpleasant smell or changes radically in colour, you could have a bacterial infection and you should get it checked out by your doctor.

  • Can you treat vaginal yeast infection with a pessary/vaginal tablet when you've got a period?

Although suffering vaginal yeast infection whilst on your period is the last thing you want, changes in hormone levels make this extremely common. You can treat your vaginal yeast infection during a period with a pessary/vaginal tablet treatment like Canesten, however if your period is particularly heavy you might want to use Canesten Cream to relieve the itching and then use a pessary/vaginal tablet once your flow is lighter. Alternatively, Canesten Oral capsule or Duo can be used depending on what is awailable in your country.

  • Isn't vaginal yeast infection a sexually transmitted disease?

No, vaginal yeast infection is not strictly an infection you only get when having unprotected sexual intercourse. However, it is possible that your partner could re-infect you if he is a carrier, or suffers with Candidal Balanitis (male yeast infection). The partner should then also be treated with Canesten Cream or Oral Capsule to prevent re-infection, this can be used depending on what is awailable in your country.
